What Parts of the Face Does a Facelift Correct?

Smiling Blond Female with Satin BlouseMany Dallas women and men who are unhappy with the aging look of their face inquire with Advanced Facial Plastic Surgery Center to see if a facelift is right for them. And one of their most common questions is, “What parts of the face do a facelift correct?”

While some patients incorrectly assume that a facelift addresses the entire face, there are actually a variety of facial plastic surgery procedures to address different parts of the face. A facelift is designed to address the lower third of the face, by:

  • Eliminating deep wrinkles around the nose and mouth.
  • Addressing sagging or sunken cheeks.
  • Removing excess skin from the neck and lower face, often referred to as jowls.

Here is an explanation about how Dallas plastic surgeon Dr. Bassichis achieves these goals when performing a facelift.

Addressing Wrinkles and Sagging or Sunken Cheeks

To address the lower third of the face, Dr. Bassichis performs a hairline incision in his patients up, around and below their ears. This “hidden” incision gives Dr. Bassichis access to the skin needed to tighten up loose skin and remove unwanted, sagging skin.

Removing Jowls

For a facelift, Dr. Bassichis also makes hidden incisions in his Dallas patients to remove unwanted jowls around the lower face or the neck. By making a small incision at the bottom of the chin, he is able to gain the access needed to remove these unwanted facial features.

Am I a Candidate for a Facelift?

Dallas men and women desiring a facelift surgery at Advanced Facial Plastic Surgery Center must meet certain criteria that Dr. Bassichis has set for his patients. These include:

  • Having the issues that a facelift can address
  • Being in good overall general health, and providing access to your medical records
  • Being in good mental health
  • Passing a pre-op exam for elective surgery before your procedure

Your Experience on Surgery Day

When you arrive for your facelift surgery, you’ll have needed to fast for at least 12 hours. This is because both surgeons and anesthesiologists alike feel it is unsafe to perform elective procedures on patients with a full stomach, as general anesthesia may cause nausea, and give you the risk for aspirating in your lungs.

When it’s time to go backstage, you’ll first be called to a pre-op room where nurses and medical technicians will prep you for your facelift. When it’s go-time, you’ll be wheeled to the operating room. The anesthesiologist will insert an IV in your arm to administer general anesthesia, and you’ll be asleep in seconds.

After your asleep, Dr. Bassichis will begin his work on your facelift, making the hidden incisions we discussed to give you a new, rejuvenated facial look. After your surgery is complete and you have been stitched back up, you’ll be transferred to a post-op room where you’ll awaken and be monitored until it’s determined that it’s safe for you to go home. You will need a friend or family member to drive you home as patients who receive general anesthesia are not allowed to drive the same day.
