Depression Cure = Cosmetic Surgery!?

There are innumerable studies of the merits of plastic surgery many of which focus on subjective concerns including self-esteem and satisfaction. However another study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal looked at the effect of plastic surgery on depression, but used an interesting indication of success: the use of antidepressants. Involving 362 patients who had cosmetic surgery over a 1-year interval, according to study findings approximately one-third of patients who took antidepressants and underwent cosmetic plastic surgery discontinued these medications after the operation. Furthermore, 98 percent of patients reported a marked improvement in self-esteem following surgery. Eighty-seven percent of patients reported satisfaction following their surgery, including improvements in their overall body image.  The patients also reported less negative body image emotions in social situations. While plastic surgery cannot be the only variable, it can clearly be beneficial to the appearance and the psychological status of patients. However, reflecting on this study in relation to our practice here at ADVANCED, we often feel that it is not only the  fabulous results, but that the positive interactions between our compassionate surgeon and patients and the genuine support  of our amazing staff can truly change the quality of a patient’s life forever.
